Currie & Brown will pay for our chosen candidate(s) to earn a bachelor’s degree in quantity surveying from the University College of Estate Management (UCEM) while working for our company. UCEM is a globally recognized university known for its highly skilled graduates and the high demand for those candidates. Terms and conditions will be listed in our offer of employment.
 
Core duties
As a junior construction consultant, your primary responsibility will be to learn and grow. Through work experience and continuous application of your learnings, you will be on-track to developing a career as a well-rounded construction professional who understands the relationship between cost, time, and quality. You will also work alongside professional quantity surveyors and have the opportunity to experience projects of varying types and size. Expect to learn about the following subjects and how to use them in practical application:
  • Pre-contract, and post contract procedures
  • Cost estimating and cost benchmarking
  • Life cycle cost planning
  • Procurement methods and techniques
  • Contract administration
  • Evaluation of construction bids
  • The term ‘value for money’
  • Value management and value engineering
  • Risk assessments
  • Project management
  • Sustainable construction
  • Effective project communication, including how to work cross-functionally with project teams including clients, contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders.
 
What skills and attributes are we looking for from you
  • At least 30 college credits or an associate degree in construction management, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Interested in pursuing a company-funded bachelor’s degree in quantity surveying.
  • Aptitude to learn and a strong desire to become a chartered quantity surveyor in the future.
  • Proactiveness in your approach to learning and working at the same time.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Enjoys working with numbers. This position will revolve largely around construction costs.
  • Interested in working in an office environment. This position will be office-based, not site-based (although occasional visits to site will occur, when required).
  • Reliable transportation to-and-from work (office location Hillsboro, Oregon).
  • A team player with a ‘can-do’ attitude, outgoing, polite, patient, diplomatic, personable, respectful, and flexible.
